Atlanta Business Chronicle Profiles Jean Marie Richardson, CEO of iFOLIO
ATLANTA, July 25, 2022 / Atlanta Business Chronicle /
The Atlanta Business Chronicle profiled Jean Marie Richardson, CEO of iFOLIO about the company and growth. Here is the article printed on July 25, 2022.
Jean Marie Richardson left a career at companies including MasterCard and Microsoft to launch a marketing startup. Her digital platform company, iFOLIO, personalizes marketing for company sales. Its signature product, iFOLIO Cloud, allows companies to integrate the platform into their workflows.
The startup's clients now include Madison Square Garden, Notre Dame University, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, The Texas Rangers MLB, Cadence Bank, and more.
Today, Richardson has a staff of 30, 17 investors and over 5,500 customers.
What led to your career?
After graduating from Georgia Tech, I worked in the tech industry at Oracle Corporation, where I was a product manager. Our top sales reps wanted sales presentations that were more dynamic than a PowerPoint to stand out to customers. Current options required a dev team, were time consuming and were difficult to customize. By the time I was recruited to Microsoft, my research had started for iFOLIO, a collaborative platform for personalized digital marketing. When I secured the trademark on the name iFOLIO, I left the corporate world and went all in.
Who was your biggest influence in your career?
Some of my earliest memories are when I was five years old at my Dad's office. He owned a real estate company, had a team and this big desk where he would meet with customers. By the time I was seven years old, I decided I wanted to lead a business, help customers build things, and have a team.
Bert Thornton, president emeritus of Waffle House was my first partner. His experience growing Waffle House has helped iFOLIO scale our operations and culture. Richard Bergmark, CFO and EVP of Core Lab, was a Yellow Jacket athlete and swimmer phenom. He was on the team that took Core Labs public. John Brock III, a Yellow Jacket and retired chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises, grew Coca-Cola Bottling Co. into the global giant that it is.
What is the hardest business lesson you've learned?
Choosing to be a startup is choosing two things: to be a pioneer on new unforged paths, and to be an underdog... until you aren't. That is like so many strong, awesome women I know, pushing the boundaries to do amazing things! It is hard. People contract with big corporations just because they are big, not because their solution is better. Ninety-seven percent of startups go out of business in year one. Ninety-nine percent of startups never make it to $1 million in revenue. I'm proud that iFOLIO has made it past those large milestones.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
It means a lot to me that during the pandemic, iFOLIO powered 300 Million seconds of engagement for our clients. This is an industry that averages 8 seconds of engagement with a doc or email, and open rates for automated email have shrunk as low as 2%.
Less than 1% of tech companies are founded by females. As a female founder, I'm passionate about innovation, fostering diversity, and team culture. I'm proud of 3 patents on web analytics. It's great to see the creativity on our team, their glass half full, customer first mentality, and our collaborative innovations with clients.
iFOLIO has had some major accomplishments recently. What have been some of those and how have you grown the company over the last few years?
iFOLIO powers over 5,500 clients across industries today including Madison Square Garden, Cadence Bank, Equifax, Georgia Tech, and many more. The pandemic has been incredibly hard for most companies, including iFOLIO. I am so proud of our team for working so hard and delivering five key milestones: generated 300 million seconds of engagement for our clients in all 50 states and 100 countries; won two patents on analytics; received WBENC certification for being woman owned, the SOC 2 certification for our security; just closed a contract for 3 million digital stories with Georgia Tech; and also closed contracts with Georgia State University, Notre Dame and others in the last couple of months.
